House of Worship - From the Rabbi
A Message From the Rabbi

I’m often asked, “What kind of Rabbi are you?” This seems like a trick question! What am I supposed to say—a good rabbi…a nice rabbi…a caring rabbi? Then I realize what the questioner wants to know…Ah, a Reform rabbi!

Ideologically, I am Reform. I believe that while the essence of Judaism is eternal, the outward forms do change—in response to the needs of the times. I also recognize the power of tradition, and how the beauty of our Jewish customs can enrich us…and point us to the deeper truths by which we seek to live. Our principles are grounded in Torah, which we are called to study throughout our lives.

To me, the noun Jew is far more important than any adjective—such as Reform—that may be applied to it. While I am a liberal religionist and do speak from that perspective, my over-riding concern is for Klal Yisrael—the total Jewish community.

I am also a passionate advocate for Outreach. It is imperative that we open our doors wide to all who seek to enter, and we must proudly proclaim…and show by our actions…that all are welcome. Our Scripture offers this invitation: “My House shall be called a House of Prayer for all peoples.” This is our mandate.

Since its founding, I have been blessed to serve Congregation B’nai Tzedek as its rabbi. I truly believe that our synagogue is a spiritual home to all who choose to make it theirs. We offer opportunities for Jewish learning to people of all ages. We provide a warm, nurturing environment for growth. Our guiding principle is this: Every person was created in the Divine Image; each person counts!

Won’t you join us as we strengthen one another?

Faithfully,

Rabbi Stephen J. Einstein
