 Fourth and Fifth Grade Hebrew Studies

Level 4 Focus:
 Relationship between being a member of a community and behavior

¨      Torah – Studying the Books of B’midbar (Numbers) and D’varim (Deuteronomy), students learn about their responsibility to strive toward holiness by observing the brit (covenant)
¨      Avodah – Understanding that kevah (fixed prayer) and kavannah (intention brought to prayer) are complimentary aspects of worship, and when combined, help make sacred connections
¨      G’milut Chasadim – Doing g’milut chasadim, students learn how behavior affects relationships
 
Level 5 Focus: Understanding Reform Judaism and the power of community
¨      Torah – Studying Nevi’im (The Prophets), students learn that the words and messages of the prophets are at the heart of Reform Judaism
¨      Avodah– Through learning and the discipline of prayer, students increase their connection to the Jewish people and strengthen their relationship with God
¨      G’milut Chasadim – As part of klal yisrael (the community of Israel), students learn they are responsible to “reach out” and actively support and sustain the Jewish community
 
Jewish values are examined by studying of some of the most dramatic moments of the twentieth century through the lives of famous Jews within the worlds of sports, science, film and politics.
 
Traditional practices, modern observances, blessings and stories that bring Jewish life-cycle celebrations to life, are introduced. 
 
Jewish holiday history and practice, relevant mitzvot (commandments) and minhagim (customs); Hebrew and English blessings; biblical and rabbinic texts; related rituals, foods, and symbols; and rabbinic stories and legends are studied as relates to Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, Pesach, Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), Shavuot and Tishah B'av.
 
 
Fourth and Fifth Grade Hebrew Studies
 
Fourth Grade - Aleph
Employing the best in contemporary educational theory, students:
¨      Solidify Hebrew consonant and vowel recognition
¨      Solidify Hebrew script writing
¨      Learn to read selected key prayers and blessings, including Sh’ma, V’ahavta and Aleinu
¨      Increase Hebrew vocabulary
¨      Learn basic pronunciation/reading rules
 
Fifth Grade – Bet
Students study opening prayers for the Shacharit (Shabbat morning service), and prayers and blessings for the home, including: Barechu, Ma'ariv Aravim, Yotzer Or, Sh’ma, V'ahavta, Mi Chamochah, Brachot shel Mitzvah, Brachot shel Shabbat, Brachot shel Yom Tov, Kiddush
