House of Study - High School
Programs for 9th-12th Grade

The educational programming for 9th through 12th graders recognizes the students' growing independence as they progress through High School. These young men and women will soon be adults, trying to find their place in a complex world.

The programs for these students expose them to a variety of settings and experiences. Students are encouraged to engage in discussion and activities that help them define themselves as Jewish adults.

9th GRADE
Our congregation is proud to participate in the 9th Grade Adat Noar Program through the Orange County Bureau of Jewish Education. CBT provides a partial scholarship for each of our students in the program.

10th GRADE: CONFIRMATION
Confirmation students attend school once a week and are taught by the Rabbi and Religious School Educator. This year of study is geared toward the 10th graders' view of the world, engaging the teen-age students in discussion and debate about a variety of topics. At the end of the year, students lead the Erev Shavuot service, during which they are confirmed in a moving ceremony.

The following are some of the themes and concepts presented and discussed:

Ethics and Values: These topics deal with issues of Jewish identity and Jewish survival. Questions such as “Who is a Jew?” and “Should Jews continue to be Jewish?” are be discussed. The class explores changing Jewish traditions, inter-dating and inter-marriage, teen issues such as eating disorders, drugs and alcohol use, college choices and assimilation. The students will also discuss with the rabbi important events and issues of the day, in terms of what Judaism has to say about them.

Bible: A selection of the weekly Torah portion will be analyzed in some depth each week. Discussion regarding the meaning of the portion and relating it to contemporary issues and/or situations will be explored. Toward the end of the year, the students will create their own confirmation service which will be held on the eve of Shavuot.
